Through “Scene/Seen,” I explore the interplay between personal memory and collective experience, presenting a “zoomed in vs. zoomed out” perspective on life, memory, and perception.
“Living in your own world,” and “what you see is what you get” are phrases that came to mind while painting the contrast between the cropped individuals, highlighting their own experience, and the viewer standing overhead having a totally different experience entirely, equally as beautiful, but taking in the greater scene. The zoomed out scenes are painted loosely and layered just as I believe it’s a challenge to notice in detail so much at once. The zoomed in moments are seen differently, more crisp, with more room for a personal story. What and who are you drawn to? Where does your attention stop and want to stay awhile? Do you prefer to stay looking in from above? We are even now a part of a larger moving scene, but can we wrangle our focus just enough to appreciate all of the tiny memories happening all around us.
This exhibition is a celebration of humanity and nature, the beautiful ways we exist in our bodies, with each other, and in this vibrant colorful world. These paintings are inspired from my favorite travels to the Costa Brava and Menorca, Spain.
